LA MÚSICA SILENCIADA

Rapsódia Catalana for cello and orchestra was composed under the violent and bloody dictatorship of Franco in 1950s Catalonia – a time when many Catalans were living in exile and as refugees. Thanks to heavy censorship and oppression during the civil war, it wasn't until the 1970s that the piece was finally heard in public for the first and only time.

For 50 years the piece remained silenced. However, the Palau de la Música Catalana (who had first programmed the piece) put it at the heart of a celebratory concert once again, alongside a number of other compositions which had been similarly hushed during the regime's rule. We worked together with the Orchestra Simfònica Solidària de Barcelona and soloist Maria Coll Torra to build an identity, a campaign and collateral for the concert which spoke to the idea of censorship.
